Countries across Africa continue to face major challenges in education as nearly one in three children do not complete primary school. Efforts to measure the quality of schooling have revealed high number of students who have limited literacy or numeracy skills even after years of schooling.
In Nigeria, even though primary education is officially free and compulsory, about 10.5 million children aged 5-14 years are not in school. Only 61 percent of 6-11 years old regularly attend primary school and only 35.6 percent of children aged 36-59 months receive early childhood education. Basic education system remains underfunded; facilities are often poor, teachers inadequately trained, and participation rates are low by global standards.
PHAWI’s intervention on education is geared towards providing early psychosocial support through interfacing with women, youth, and faith-based groups on the necessity of early childhood education, especially at primary, lower, and upper secondary education. PHAWI is also willing to work with development partners in capacity building and infrastructure within the educational sector.
